It seems more scary than it really is.Separated nails, if you diagnose and treat them properly, can reattach themselve in 3-6 months.

What does it look like?
Discoloured compared to the healthy pink nail plate and can be deformed. It is usually not painful in its early stage but when the nail is further detached, infection may develop under the nail. When the nail seems to be infected it has to be cured before attaching it again. In its early stage you can treat the nail but if its is too damaged it will not be able to reattach because of the heavy deformity.

What can cause Onycholysis?
For example:Overfiled nails or any kind of pressure on the nail plate. Chemicals or allergy to certain nail products can also cause onycholysis. Toe nails can also be affected.(small shoes, active sport) Other trauma to the nail is finger sucking or nail biting. Week nails can also be a problem .

How to treat?
Stop doing what makes your nail separate and keep your hands dry and clean. Cut the nails short and if you can not avoid putting your hands in water use gloves. In serious cases when the nail is already infected (fungus) ask the doctor for advice and medicine.

What to do as a nail tech
If you seem to have more clients that suffer from separated nail plate you should consider your filing method. Make sure you do not file too agressively. Ask your client about her lifestyle because often playing volleyball suggests that nails should be no longer than the fingertips. Do not irritate the nail with nail polish.
